Calm down, Jurnee, I said in my head as I started typing my email and password in Yahoo. I checked it all the time with high anticipation for a response to one of the many publishing homes I’d submitted my chapters to. This reminded me of waiting for acceptance letters from college. Smacking my lips, I logged out after I didn’t see anything new in my inbox. If the library didn’t have the books I needed for my thesis, I would have just been in my room. I stood up, leaving my book bag and notes in my section so no one would take my spot. I got up so I could walk to the non-fiction historical section. The sixties was the theme of my thesis and my professor gave strict rules on being specific and creative.

“The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage by Todd Gitlin.” I read the title of the book out loud. I flipped it over and read the synopsis to see if I needed to check this book out or not.

“How did I know you would be in here?”

I turned around with a small smile when I heard Chastin’s low voice. When I met him at the vending machine some months back, I had no plans on us talking again. We were at the same school and lived in the dorms, and before that day, I had never even seen him. But, a few days after our meeting, I ran into him in the bookstore.

I still wasn’t trying to talk, especially because it was a day after the breakup. However, I had left my wallet on my dresser, then had to put my books and school hoodie back, go all the way back to the dorms, get my wallet and come back. Chastin stepped in and offered to cover my tab. I kind of snapped at him, but then I felt bad because he was only trying to help. I tried to pay him back and he told me I could have a coffee with him in the café. I agreed and he made me laugh the whole two hours we hung out.

Let me speak the unknown; I am not in any way looking for a boyfriend. I made it crystal clear to him, and I made it clear to everyone. But a friend was something I could always use. Chastin was really cool. He wasn’t extra, didn’t have any drama, and I liked how there were no strings attached when I was around him.

“Because I told you this paper wasn’t going to get the best of me, even if I have to live in this damn library,” I joked, then gave him a hug.

Chastin definitely worked out because his chest was hard, and shoulders had definition. Today, he wore this long sleeve Polo with some black jeans and Valentino combat boots.

“Your scary ass knows damn well you ain’t about to stay in this damp, scary looking library. You almost made me get in an accident when a small fly was on your leg in my car the other day.
